I’m doing this book cover reading challenge because it sounds fun. The only category that’s stumping me is “A Key/Keyhole.” The only book already listed that interests me is Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter, except it doesn’t seem to actually fit the criteria. Any suggestions?

Yep. Exhibit 1: Idiocracy, a godawful movie with the central thesis that “the poors have more kids, so in a few generations we’re all gonna be too stupid to live.” Apparently they think that not only are class and intelligence linked, they’re also genetic, so we should do eugenics about it I guess?

I, an American, also get frustrated about this, because I am “trailer trash” who grew up in poverty building an enormous vocabulary by reading everything I could get my hands on, and most other Americans have no idea what to do with that.

Look, I found Firefly at 15 and LOVED it. It was one of the first times I’d ever seen characters who talked like me and weren’t stupid and/or evil, especially in sci-fi.

It was also racist as hell and created by a notorious misogynist, so can we not?
