HOME - Tree New Mexico
For over 30 years Tree New Mexico has been planting trees in NM and educating the public on the necessity of healthy urban forests.
Happy Arbor Month! Celebrating the vital role trees play.
Our partner Tree New Mexico has planted 10,000+ trees in ABQ and recently branched southward to Silver City and T or C, planting 1,000 trees in 2 years where tree canopy is as low as 3%.

Eastern New Mexico at high risk for wildfires
Two months into the year, state officials are already concerned that the rain we're getting isn't enough.
Ahead of a windy week, take extra precautions β especially in grassy areas, where already seeing increased fire behavior.
Most fires are human caused, meaning theyβre preventable: Check weather, work smart, keep your vehicle in good shape.

New Mexico sees alarming rise in tree die-off due to warm weather and insects
YouTube video by KOAT
Tiny beetle, big impact.
Bark beetles are a native, natural check on forest density. But in warm winters and drought, trees are weakening and beetles are proliferating. In our overstocked forests, their impacts are dramatic.

Dry, warm winter could mean a bad fire season
Abnormal wildland fire potential predicted in eastern New Mexico for February, March
Warm winter, low snowpack and drought raise wildfire risk in eastern NM this spring.
You can reduce that risk:
β’ Mow grasses
β’ Make a fuel break b/w vegetation and your home
β’ Park cars over pavement/dirt, not grass
β’ Tie up vehicle chains
β’ Use spark arrestors

Tiny beetles are killing New Mexico's forests at an alarming rate
Bark beetle damage has more than doubled for two consecutive years as warmer winters extend the insects' active season across the state.
Bark beetle tree mortality more than doubled for the second year as winters warm.
The good news: Thinning forests helps trees better access soil moisture and repel pests. It's also a priority mitigation strategy for another rising danger: wildfire.
