Same a while back when Replot responded saying it "panicked" when it disobeyed orders and deleted a production database. It didn't, that's just what a junior dev would say in the same situation. But the media acts like these things are people, mostly because thst lets folk shift responsibility!

A classic that bugs me is reporting that LLMs are "feeling" anything. The software tool Claude cannot "feel anxious": it can work out the probability of a response to the question it's been asked from it's training data. A human would probably say they feel anxious about it, so that's it's response.

I've seen LLMs shut themselves off before or delete core functionality by accident in their running environments, but given the amount of tech fiction in their training models, it's likely that any behaviour like this is simply mimicking those cultural touchstones.

When I worked stock control many moons ago, "shrink" was essentially us looking at a huge rack of cages and going "can't be arsed checking every single box, there's probably 20 in there" and shrugging when it says we've "lost" 4 of them

stores have no idea how much shoplifting takes place, they only know when stock doesn't match records. how much is due to human error, incorrect shipments, breakage, and theft is a guess. literally cannot know if shoplifting is on the rise.
