And lastly, @naomiaklein.bsky.social quickly debunks the idea that AI will save us on climate. Instead, she reveals how AI has actually revived the fossil fuel industry, and how fossil fuels, technology, and warmongers are not-so-secret bedfellows.
@chinasa.bsky.social walks us through the intricacies of “multilateralism” and how big tech companies try to take advantage of Global Majority countries in their attempts to digitize.
@timnitgebru.bsky.social explains how “frugal AI” is just fancy wrapping for an age-old engineering concept, which is to build your solution to the size you need to address your problem.
Nikhil Dey shows us what “accountability” actually looks like, through his experience fighting for it—and winning!—in India.
How can we dream up a better world if we outsource all of our critical thinking to AI?
In our final episode of AI Lingo Bingo, we’re tackling some of the buzziest buzzwords with some incredible people...
Next Monday, March 2nd at 5:30 pm MT (7:30 pm ET), @alixdunn.com will chat with El’Bo, @seligmanforag.bsky.social, and @bedoyausa.bsky.social about how we can build worker and people power in the face of Big Tech’s lobbying. Register for the livestream here: luma.com/7ey0m3ar
Elliott “El’Bo” Awatt is trying to change that. El’Bo is a Driver Organizer with Colorado Independent Drivers United, a gig worker union that is fighting for fair wages and better working conditions in Colorado.
Gig workers like rideshare drivers have been fighting uphill against the major tech companies for fair pay and basic protections. Why does Big Tech keep getting away with paying their workers pennies?
Stay tuned for the full episode with Amos as well as conversations with Jeffrey Stern, @heidykhlaaf.bsky.social, @davidthewid.bsky.social, and @naomiaklein.bsky.social on the militarisation of AI in the next couple of months.
@amostoh.bsky.social also wrote an excellent thread about this:
You can listen to the excerpt here: www.themaybe.org/podcast/is-c...
@alixdunn.com spoke with @amostoh.bsky.social, senior counsel at the @brennancenter.org about this turning point in AI’s role in warfare last week - we’re releasing an excerpt from this conversation to the pod today so you can get up to speed on what these dealings mean for the future of AI in war.
@amostoh.bsky.social says the US military likely used Claude in the unconstitutional Venezuelan invasion and kidnapping of President Maduro. The DoD says they can do whatever they want with AI as long as it’s legally compliant. But if Claude was used in Venezuela, was it really legally compliant?
The Pentagon is threatening to pull the contract if they don’t get unfettered access, pushing Anthropic to weigh their values against their lucrative defense deal.
The Department of Defense has woven Claude deep into their operations, but Anthropic has pushed back against using their AI model for mass surveillance and AI-driven autonomous weapons systems without human oversight.
Yesterday, executives from Anthropic met with US military leaders in negotiations that essentially boil down to this: can Claude be used to kill people?
*Has* Claude been used to kill people?
Next Monday, March 2nd at 5:30 pm MT (7:30 pm ET), @alixdunn.com will chat with @bedoyausa.bsky.social, @seligmanforag.bsky.social, and Elliott “El’Bo” Awatt about how we can build worker and people power in the face of Big Tech’s lobbying.

In his time as FTC Commissioner, @bedoyausa.bsky.social worked on ending the abuse of facial recognition technology, protecting people’s privacy, and fighting for the little guys. newrepublic.com/article/2011...
Introducing @bedoyausa.bsky.social. Alvaro is the former Commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission, the founding director of @georgetownprivacy.bsky.social, and current Senior Advisor at @econliberties.bsky.social.
Big Tech surveils workers and exploits consumers through algorithmic pricing schemes—and our governments let them get away with it. What would it actually take to hold tech companies accountable?
Next Monday, March 2nd at 5:30 pm MT (7:30 pm ET), @alixdunn.com will chat with David, @bedoyausa.bsky.social, and Elliott “El’Bo” Awatt about how we can build worker and people power in the face of Big Tech’s lobbying. Register for the livestream here: luma.com/7ey0m3ar

@seligmanforag.bsky.social has a few ideas. David is the Executive Director of @towardsjustice.bsky.social and is the Democratic candidate for Colorado Attorney General, and he’s trying to build a ground-up movement to push back on corporate power.
Big Tech is lobbying our governments to expand surveillance, capture public resources for compute, and consolidate power. How can we push back with policies that put people first?
