Daf Reactions Menachot 53: The Avatar of Avraham
YouTube video by Miriam Anzovin
Shalom, friends!
Didn’t expect the #talmudic tractate on meal offerings to feature so many deep, heart to heart convos between God and God’s besties, but here we are! First with Moses and now with Abraham.
Welcome to #DafReactions Menachot 53: The Avatar of Avraham

In the Megillah it’s clear that collecting the women was an intentional act of social control over women after Vashti’s defiant act of bodily autonomy. And the villians are the ones who do that. Your argument about Esther has no merit from the actual text itself. End of story.

She’s defeating her own points. I don’t think we are making any progress here lol.

You’ve said that we shouldn’t judge history through a modern lens. We are judging him through his OWN lens. You are pushing this narrative that nobody in history knew better than to do terrible things, that’s just “how it was,” and we are showing you an example of how you are wrong.

…this is the point. He wasn’t a good person. He knew better. He chose not to free them. We know that he knew! We can’t say “oh well nobody knew it was wrong back then” because he DID and he made CHOICES

So you both refuse to see them as victims and say they are victimized? Assumptions that all girls throughout history would have been fine with this - that’s bananas. It’s clear in the Megillah Esther does NOT want this!

When I said survivor, I meant survivor. You seem to have some kind of aversion to seeing the widespread rape and sexual violence perpetuated throughout history. Noting that women were subjected to this doesn’t negate their lives and accomplishments - it makes them more impressive, not less.

No I see them as SURVIVORS of patriarchal systems that have subjugated them throughout history. Why would we need to evolve culturally if history was FINE? Do you apply the same thinking to slavery???

….YES. Unless the couple actually like each other, IT IS RAPE. That’s what history IS.

She was collected with the rest of the en masse to replace a deposed queen, lived in fear, and was raped. Marriages had rape even if the men didn’t like to call it that

WHAT THE FUCK THAT IS NOT A LEGITIMATE ARGUMENT. It was STILL RAPE. She did not want his dick in her. End of story that is rape. Don’t care how terminology has shifted.

This is such a gross take. Rich arranged marriages meant she got to eat food, cool. She still was trafficked, raped, and lived in mortal peril but hey at least she could dress nice.

We don’t take the joy out of the holiday by acknowledging Esther saved us but nobody saved her and the rest of the women of the harem. Esther sacrificed herself. That’s the whole tragedy of it. She didn’t expect to get out because, again, she was trafficked and nobody was coming to save her.

Why isn’t it a parallel, when a very similar thing is indeed happening now? The mechanism of exploration of women’s bodies and benefit from trafficking them to rich and powerful men is the same basic thing, just a few thou years later. What, realistically, has changed?

Shalom friends! Purim is a time for women’s voices to be front and center. Let’s finally hear from the women of Achashverosh’s harem, because they have some SHIT to SAY! #Purim collab with the iconic Tiferet (@tuchas_offan_tish on insta)

Being trafficked to an incredibly rich man, perhaps an oligarch, a politician - this could be “beneficial” for the people around the girl or young woman. Her family, whoever is trafficking her, to this day. For money, for access, for power. This still exists now.

Esther herself is forced into it, clearly hates it, and then at the end of the story has to remain married to her rapist forever. Societal norms might change, but it’s clear in the text this was not optional and not something all of the women were intro and they were not “willingly given.”
