You’ll need to care more about your value chain "Going into 2025, we need an industry-wide assessment of how our value chain functions because technical and regulatory forces will conspire to make our strategic position less defensible."

The folks at @niemanlab.org should have an all-business edition of their annual predictions. This one from @samguzik.com is spot on – it's all about value capture. www.niemanlab.org/2024/12/youl...

This kind of analysis will be especially important for publishers who start deploying AI products. To create strategically resonant AI tools, we’ll need innovators willing to leverage fine-tuning or some other investment to build a more valuable solution.

Given the proposals for Trump’s second term, it’s clear that news leaders won’t just need to wrestle with how changing search and social algorithms impact news discovery: They’ll need to make choices about where their data is hosted and what service providers they use for fundamental operations.

Going into next year, I think we need an industry-wide assessment of how our value chain functions because technical and regulatory forces will conspire to make our strategic position less defensible.

My prediction for 2025: Newsrooms will need to care more about their value chain.

But the bottom line from that talk was this:

β€œAI is not a strategy”

To survive, news organizations need to stay focused on our mission and our audiences.

If we use AI to solve real problems and connect people, we have a future. If we chase tech for its own sake, we'll repeat past mistakes.

Multimodality, content fight, and supply chain are 3 AI areas to watch Sam Guzik, senior director of product at New York Public Radio and foresight affiliate for Future Today Institute, shares his thoughts on AI developments news publishers should track in 2025.

Grateful to INMA for letting me talk about the AI trends news leaders should be following in 2025.

TL;DR:
1) Multi-modality is an opportunity and a threat
2) Model collapse and scaling laws will drive the future of content value
3) The AI supply chain matters, a lot.

Envisioning the future of journalism A selection of scenarios from the Future Today Institute trend report describing how AI and other emerging technologies will impact the future of news.

One of my favorite parts of FTI’s Tech Trends Report are the scenarios.

Scenarios surface strategic insights. They make far-off risk feel urgent. And they help us start essential conversations about how we should respond to what's happening in the present.

1. Generative AI is mainstream.
2. Digital traffic dynamics are shifting.
3. Publishers are losing power in the content value chain.
4. Foundations are the new hedge funds, offering an influx of cash to fund journalism.
5. Trust is essential for media businesses, but it is at near-historic lows.

The thesis of this year’s report is that we’re entering a β€œtechnology supercycle”—a wave of innovation so potent and pervasive that it promises to reshape our very existence. I wrote the News+Information section, which covers the inflection points in our news ecosystem.

Devices are the new gatekeepers "What these devices have in common is that they use AI as a layer to synthesize incoming information and determine what and when information should reach users."

In Nieman Journalism Lab's annual collection of predictions for the future of journalism, I wrote about how devices are the new gatekeepers.

Devices increasingly use AI as a layer to synthesize incoming information and determine what and when information should reach users.
